Tysers have been active in the Indian Sub-Continent either as ship-owners and agents or latterly as reinsurance brokers since the mid 19th Century.
By the 1950s we had a strong position in Pakistan as flag brokers to the Government owned Insurance Company as well as acting for other Insurers generally, particularly in East Pakistan, so when the 1971 War of Independence broke out, leading to the establishment of Bangladesh, we quickly became involved with the fledgling domestic insurance industry there.
The emergency establishment of what was effectively a reinsurance programme for an entire nation, albeit for just the one Government owned company, was a challenge that required almost full-time attention and many visits from London.
By the mid 1980s the Government felt the industry was ready for private sector involvement and it was decided to allow formation of Private Insurance Companies. At the same time, new industries were appearing and new demands arising and it became apparent that for us to satisfactorily service the account it was going to be necessary to open a local office that would be able to assist these needs on a daily basis. In 1995, therefore, we were really pleased to be able to recruit Mr S K Paul Choudhury, who was retiring as General Manager Reinsurance at Sadharan Bima Corporation, the Government Insurer (and also Reinsurer) to establish an officially registered liaison or contact office.
Paul quickly assembled a small team to assist him in carrying out these functions and in due course was joined, in 2007 by Mr S M Moinul Islam, previously of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, as his deputy. We now operate a combined office for both the Dhaka Liaison Office (DLO) and the Risk Management operation (TRMBL) which between them have some 15 staff members, under the day to day leadership of Moinul Islam, our Country Manager.
