Making waves in Marine claims

Tysers Insurance Brokers |

Tysers’ Marine Claims team is led by Chris Sydenham, Chairman and Karl Haynes, Managing Director, and prides itself on providing a dynamic response to handling of some of the biggest and most complex Marine insurance claims in the market. These values and skills came to the fore recently with several extraordinary, fast-moving claims requiring the team to demonstrate the range of their capabilities and collaborative approach, working around the clock with clients and underwriters to resolve challenging situations.

  • A major incident involving a fire in a vessel’s engine room caused catastrophic damage (very fortunately with no loss of life), requiring immediate action to organise towage of the vessel to safety. The team worked closely with underwriters and owners to source the right number of tugs to tow the distressed vessel to safety. This meant working through the night because of a very tight deadline and an impending typhoon due to hit the area. The team succeeded in getting the underwriters to advance just under US$1mn inside two hours to allow the tow to commence. Handling this claim truly required a 24/7 service for owners and further advance payments have been made to assist with the vessel’s repair needs.

  • At the same time, Tysers was faced with the total loss of a large fishing vessel that sank with the sad loss of life of one crew member. The total loss claim was settled within a few weeks of the incident and arrangements are in hand to conclude the crew compensation claim.

  • In an increasingly unpredictable geo-political landscape, Tysers has developed a strong reputation for handling and settling war-related losses, having successfully and swiftly settled claims for two vessels blocked and trapped in Ukraine following the Russian invasion, and the recent loss of a vessel in the Red Sea. Tysers led the way in collecting the claim for the vessel in Ukraine on the one-year anniversary of its loss, the first day possible to collect the claim.

  • Piracy attacks continue to threaten the maritime world with activity emanating from Somalia re-emerging in 2024. Tysers’ expertise in resolving claims in such sensitive and dangerous cases was called upon earlier this year when handling a crew hostage situation off the coast of Somalia. Tysers, underwriters and owners worked in close collaboration with response consultants to achieve the safe release of the vessel and crew within just one month.

Karl Haynes, Managing Director, Wholesale Claims, said: “Deep market knowledge, effective communication and swift and decisive action are key to resolving complex and large claims. From first being alerted to the issue, the Marine Claims team works diligently and tirelessly on behalf of our clients, who are often faced with extremely stressful situations. This commitment to providing a superior client service and my team’s superb technical skills and industry understanding, ensure the best outcomes in challenging, and often dangerous, situations. At Tysers our clients always come first, and I am proud to lead such a talented and dedicated team.”
